Enabling Proactive Decision Support to Improve Road Safety

Road safety incidents are at an epidemic level in the US resulting in 37,000 deaths and 4.5 million injuries annually. AIM, a data analytics platform, aids transport engineers and planners to seamlessly and proactively detect, understand and respond to road safety risks across a road network before people are killed or seriously injured.

The Challenge

How might we increase collaboration and data usage to enhance road safety in Broward County, Florida?

The Problem
Car-centric infrastructure in the US has long been a dominant urban planning approach, emphasising the prioritisation of automobiles over other modes of transportation. While this infrastructure has facilitated convenient mobility for many, it has also contributed significantly to the alarming rate of road accidents in the country. Despite safety advancements, the overemphasis on wide roads, high-speed limits, and inadequate pedestrian and cyclist facilities has created an environment where accidents are more likely to occur. Underpinning this problem is a fundamentally flawed approach to road safety that is reactive rather than proactive. At present, interventions occur only after fatalities or serious injuries, making deaths a prerequisite for road safety investment.

My Role

Why? To outline what elements I contributed to on this project.

Secondary Research
Looking at the transport safety problems within the context of Carolina County as well as pilot projects within the state already attempting to drive digital transformation and proactive decision support.


Primary Research
Carried out interviews with transport directors, operators and engineers to understand their needs, map out current processes, identify key pain points, and recognise areas where value could be added.


Research Synthesis
Carried out a thematic analysis to systematically translate the information gathered into actionable insights.


Workshop Design & Facilitation
Designed and delivered multiple in person workshops through each stage of the design process to playback work, collectively problem solve, align on roadmaps and test prototypes.


Prototyping
Designed and developed multiple wireframes, mock ups and interactive prototypes from low fidelity to high fidelity in order to seamless communicate concepts and use during usability testing sessions.


Collaboration
Collaborated with a large multidisciplinary team, including data analysts, front end developers, back end developers and consultants in order to develop and ship a data driven product from 0-1.


Report Generation & Presentation
Designed and presented various reports and decks to seamlessly communicate the complexity of our subject matter to the wider business.
