What Does the Future of Transport Operations Look Like?

Transport operations are in the midst of a fundamental shift in how they are viewed, managed and delivered, driven by powerful socio-technical changes. This research study examines the broader needs and environment of present transport operations, and points to several areas where impact could be made to improve cities and the lives of their citizens, while creating new capabilities in an emerging market.

The Challenge

HMW enable Transport Departments to tackle these complex and often competing challenges smoothly?

The Problem
In recent decades, the priority of transport has evolved from the movement of vehicles, to the optimal movement of goods and people. This shift in service focus has been accelerated by the digitalisation of transport infrastructure and steady convergence of various modes of transport. However, despite progress being made, this change in service priority combined with digitalisation, has created an environment with a rapidly proliferating network of data points that are struggling to be supported by a sector that for most of its history has remained largely unchanged, characterised by slow incremental innovation, costly infrastructure and disconnected systems.

My Role

Why? To outline what elements I contributed to on this project.

Secondary Research
Looking at the broader context of transport operations as well as investigating factors driving digital modernisation in transport within the US and European markets.

Primary Research
Carried out 24 Interviews with SME’s, transport Operators and Engineers to understand their needs, problems and behaviours.

Systems Design
Developed interactive systems diagrams to visually highlight the complexity of the system and interdependent issues.

Research Synthesis
Carried out a thematic analysis to systematically translate the information gathered into actionable insights.

Workshop Design & Facilitation
Designed and delivered multiple workshops that were run with numerous transport departments to collaboratively identify problem areas and initiate concept development.

Report Generation & Presentation
Designed and presented various reports and decks to seamlessly communicate the complexity of our subject matter to the wider business.
